چکیده

We formulate and investigate a statistical inverse problem of a random tomographic nature, where a probability density function on R is to be recovered from observation of finitely many of its twodimensional projections in random and unobservable directions. Such a problem is distinct from the classic problem of tomography where both the projections and the unit vectors normal to the projection plane are observable. The problem arises in single particle electron microscopy, a powerful method that biophysicists employ to learn the structure of biological macromolecules. Strictly speaking, the problem is unidentifiable and an appropriate reformulation is suggested hinging on ideas from Kendall’s theory of shape. Within this setup, we demonstrate that a consistent solution to the problem may be derived, without attempting to estimate the unknown angles, if the density is assumed to admit a mixture representation.

Numerical Meshless Method in Conjunction with Bayesian Theorem for Electrical Tomography of Concrete

Electric potential measurement technique (tomography) was introduced as a nondestructive method to evaluate concrete properties and durability. In this study, numerical meshless method was developed to solve a differential equation which simulates electric potential distribution for concrete with inclusion in two dimensions. Therefore, concrete samples with iron block inclusion in different loc...

Estimating Reproductive Costs with Multi-State Mark-Recapture Models, Multiple Observable States, and Temporary Emigration

Multi-state mark-recapture models have seen increased use in recent years for studies of reproductive costs. When individuals in both breeding and non-breeding states can be observed, multi-state models can be used to directly estimate reproductive costs by comparing state-specific estimates of survival and breeding probabilities. The method assumes that each state that an animal occupies is ob...

Quickest Detection Problems for Bessel Processes

Consider the motion of a Brownian particle that initially takes place in a twodimensional plane and then after some random/unobservable time continues in the three-dimensional space. Given that only the distance of the particle to the origin is being observed, the problem is to detect the time at which the particle departs from the plane as accurately as possible. We solve this problem in the m...

Investigation of pore-scale random porous media using lattice boltzmann method

The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...
